Price: come tradurre ‘prezzo’ in inglese
di Claudia RicciStefano MaffeiLa parola di oggi è piuttosto semplice: prezzo in inglese si traduce con price. Il verbo associato è to pay (lett. pagare). I prezzi possono variare: expensive oppure inexpensive (o, ma è più colloquiale, cheap), high oppure low. Nel marketing si parla anche di market price, best price, selling price oppure di half price e full price.
In tema di offerte speciali, le pubblicità (ads) fanno spesso riferimento a espressioni come discounted price oppure special price. A proposito di sconti, both the expressions ‘two for the price of one’ and ‘buy one, get one free’ are common phrases used to describe a special offer when you buy one product (quando acquisti un prodotto) at normal price, and get another one of the same product for free (gratis).
Quello che non tutti sanno è che to price è anche un verbo che significa proprio prezzare o dare un prezzo: è quindi corretto scrivere in times of recession, shops need to price their goods slightly lower to attract customers (al fine di attirare clienti). Nel passivo si potrebbe anche dire che the shares were too highly priced (alle azioni era stato dato un valore troppo alto).
Gli analisti fanno talvolta delle previsioni sull’andamento dei prezzi in futuro: we can expect a further increase/decrease in the price of traded commodities (materie prime). Per inciso, le materie prime più diffuse sono corn (mais), oats (avena), wheat (frumento), milk, sugar, ecc. Allo stesso modo, si può dire che the price of precious metals (come oro, argento, platino) has remained stable in the last few years.
Troverete spesso anche l’espressione price tag per descrivere il cartellino con il prezzo ovvero, per essere precisi a label (un’etichetta) attached to a piece of merchandise indicating its price.
Non è forse sempre vero, ma chi corrompe lo sa bene: everyone has their price (ogni persona ha il suo prezzo).
